WIP Wednesday – State Block Style
A few weeks ago I mentioned on my Facebook page that I was working on a DIY quilt project for my house. Well, I finally finished it a few days ago and here are the (almost done) results:
Oohhh! More quilt blocks, you say. What is so ‘special’ about those? Well, the meaning of these blocks can be explained from their names. Top left and right: California and Florida. Bottom left and right: Virginia and Pennyslvania. These state blocks represent the birth states for our family. Oldest son and I were both born in Florida so we share a block, but the hubby claims California , middle has Pennsylvania and youngest has Virginia. One child in each state we’ve lived in! Don’t get any ideas family……that ship has sailed so no New York babies!
The Florida and Pennsylvania blocks I pieced. Slowly. There were some smaller pieces and seams that were new-ish to me but they came together nicely. The California and Virginia blocks were a breeze. All my boys have favorite colors, so I made sure their blocks had colors and fabrics they enjoyed. They have good taste, huh?
The final step in this project is for me to find frames for them. I’ve been looking around for larger square frames with no luck, so I think I will end up at Michaels and make my own. The look I want is my 12″x12″ block with a nice neutral mat in a 13″ x 13″ frame. Gotta find one of those 60% off coupons!
If you search on Pinterest for state quilt blocks you’ll find a ton of resources, there are also a few books on the subject ass well. If you head over to my Pinterest page, you’ll see I started a board for them and will start to add more as I find them.
Have a great Wednesday everyone and thanks for visiting! Today I’m linking up over at Freshly Pieced. Check it out.
This is SUCH a good idea. I am probably going to have to do this someday when we have kids!
Thanks! I think it will look nice once I put them up in frames 🙂
