Zakka 2.0 Cafe Apron ~ Completed!
I am totally loving the Zakka 2.0 sew-along! This is week 3: The Cafe Apron. Here’s my finished apron:
The main fabric I used was a natural Essex linen. The tie was from a jelly roll of Cosmo Cricket and the remaining materials were a little of this and that from my huge scrap bin. That’s one of the things I love most about this sew-along is that there are so many opportunities for me to use my scraps!
I have very little experience with piecing blocks like this. The first block looked a little sketchy when I was done, so I had to take it apart a little bit to fix. By the time I was half-way through my second block I felt much more comfortable and finished it quickly. My squares measured 1/4″ smaller than the pattern stated (hey-rookie here!) but I don’t think it really affected the finished look too much.
I used a slate blue thread to hem around the apron. When I completed my apron and looked at it I thought, “Hey, the waist needs a little something.” So I found a stitch design on my Janome I hadn’t used before and gave it a go. I’m loving the cute little flowers and it really finished the look of my apron. Another change I made to my apron was to do a topstitch between blocks to separate them into sections.
Coming up next week is a classic block placemat. I already have the fabrics picked out and ready to go. I am going to alter the pattern not in size or general look, but for the way I will be using it. And it’s not for eating! I’ll share more next week. After the placemat I will be taking a break from the Sew-Along for a few weeks. We are heading into the baby/child section and while I love the projects, I am going to try and make the book quilt coming up after that and I have a feeling it will be taking me some time!! Before I leave tonight, I want to dedicate the success of my Zakka sew-along items to a fabulous lady. She is a new friend, always by my side and has taught me so much about the importance of quality fabric. I have a feeling she will be around for a long time. Here she is..
Say hello to Mary Ellen Best Press. Isn’t she pretty?! Thank you Mary Ellen for all your help. I appreciate it. ~ Cindy
I’m going to have to make friends with Mary Ellen, too – your block is great! Pretty apron!
Thank you so much Amy! Not only is Best Press great to work with, I can get it at our local fabric store easily. They have the regular spray bottles of it, but they also sell larger refill jugs. So when I get a coupon I will go buy a refill jug for cheap 🙂
